The University Startup World Cup 2015 will take place on September 14–18 in Copenhagen, right in the heart of Scandinavia, one of the strongest startup scenes in the world.

During one week, the 50 finalist teams will, among other things, take part in pitching  sessions, innovation sessions, investor meetings and a trade show to help them develop their ideas. Finally a VIP panel will choose the best university student startup in the world.

The program will be updated continuously, so stay tuned.

The University Startup World Cup is a competition and a development program, dedicated to furher improving the world’s next wave of entrepreneurs. We gather the most promising student startups from across the globe and bring them together for one intense week of development and networking. Fifty teams will compete in the finals with the chance of winning both cash prizes and valuable mentor programs provided by experienced entrepreneurs. All non-profit.

The University Startup World Cup is organized by the non-profit organization Venture Cup who has more than 15 years of experience in finding entrepreneurs of tomorrow and facilitate the creation of new businesses.

The University Startup World Cup is a competition between student startups. All teams must have at least one person who is a student, faculty member or recent graduate (within the current calendar year) at the time of submission.

Teams must have a minimum of two members. At least two members of each team must be available to travel to Copenhagen between September 14-18 and it is mandatory to participate in all activities during the week.

Once you have written your business plan you should have a clear idea of what category your plan belongs in. Industry experts will read, rate, and provide vital feedback based on their category insight, so choosing the right category is important for both jury and participants.

We will screen all business plans to make sure you are entered in the category that best fits your idea, and you can apply with as many ideas as you want in any number of categories. You cannot however submit the same idea in more than one category.

In the countries where national competitions are held under the Venture Cup license, or by Venture Cup’s partners, teams will be selected directly to the final through these competitions.

In countries without a Venture Cup partner competition, teams can apply directly by writing us.

The University Startup World Cup 2015 will take place on September 14-18 in beautiful Copenhagen, Denmark. One of the strongest startup scenes in the world, right in the heart of Scandinavia.

Teams are selected by our jury, which is made up of talented entrepreneurs, senior business people and investors from all over the world. The jury assesses all incoming business plans and rates the potentials of the idea both on in general and based on criteria related to the specific category. The selection is made via YouNoodle and finalists are announced on this website and via e-mail directly to the finalists.

In the countries where national competitions are held under the Venture Cup license or by Venture Cup’s partners, teams will be selected directly to the final through these competitions.

Competitors should not assume any right of confidentiality to any information presented or discussed in public sessions. Please be aware that members of the media, potential competitors, and members of the financial community may attend public sessions.

By participating in the competition competitors agree that Venture Cup assumes no liability and shall have no liability or obligation whatsoever for disclosures of information provided by a competitor as part of a submission or otherwise during the course of the competitions.

You must be able to cover travel and accommodation expenses to be able to participate in the University Startup World Cup. Once you send in your business plan, you have given consent to being able to participate during the third week of September.

  • be offered a one year top professional mentor program.
  • have the opportunity to win your share of the $50,000 prize pot.

A business plan is a comprehensive description of your idea and the potential business. In many cases, the most important quality of a business plan is identifying the weaknesses of the idea, which helps the entrepreneur confirm wether or not it is an idea worth committing to.

The judges will typically be looking for the following:

  • a) the innovation of your idea;
  • b) the problem it solves;
  • c) the team to solve it;
  • d) the business case;
  • e) how you will make it happen.

The business plan must not exceed 15 standard written A4 pages.

Once you have written the business plan, please save it as a PDF file of max. 10 MB and name it the same as your team or company (e.g. “rubycup.pdf” or “blacksiliconsolar.pdf”)

The 5 categories are:

  • Cleantech & environment: energy efficiency, waste management, pollution reduction etc.
  • Life science & medtech: biotech, pharma, medical devices, healthcare, biomaterials etc.
  • Mobile & web: apps, web services, search engines, augmented reality, near field communication etc.
  • Product & technology: industrial design, devices, robotics, hardware, nanotech etc.

Social entrepreneurship: welfare innovation, social & societal solutions, non-profit organization, 3rd world development etc.

As a participant you will take part in pitching sessions, innovation sessions, investor meetings, a trade show to help you work up your idea so you can compete on becoming the best student startup in the world and MORE. You will get the chance to further experience the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen. A city famous for its nordic food culture, smiling inhabitants and innovative thinking.

The teams must register Monday morning September 14, between 9-11 am at Venture Cup office, Porcelænshaven 7, 2000 Frederiksberg.

After registering you can stay around and have a chat with us, take a walk in the amazing Frederiksberg Garden nearby and watch the Elephants who stand just 10 meters away in the Frederiksberg Zoo!

At 12 am, you must be at the location ‘Ovnhallen’, Porcelænshaven 20, 2000 Frederiksberg. Here you will have lunch and an introduction to the welcome program.

Ovnhallen is just 5 minutes away from the Venture Cup office, and Frederiksberg Garden.

Sunday at daytime a World Cup representative will be in the airport to welcome and guide you to your hotel. Look out for the World Cup sign!

There will be a hotspot/information desk at the hotel.

When you arrive at the airport in Copenhagen you need to find the train station. The train is within the airport building in the very end after you’ve received your luggage and are standing in the welcome hall.

There will be signs saying “Train” but if you can’t find it please feel free to ask the airport staff. Take the train headed towards “Nivå st.” – your trip will last only 2 minutes (1 stops) until you reach “Ørestad st.”. From here you’ll have to walk Xm to your hotel.

For those of you who have been granted a refund of your flight tickets, please bring your passport and original flight booking documents to Copenhagen when you show up for registration at the Venture Cup office Monday morning – we will then transfer the money to your account.

Breakfast is included in the hotel stay every day. Lunch is provided most days at locations. On some days there will be light dinner or snacks provided in the afternoons. Please see the program for more information.

No there will be no dress code during the Univeristy Startup World Cup week. In the end of the week we’ll throw an after party, so if you want to look nice and dressed up you should definitely bring your favourite shirt/dress and take it with you to Copenhagen! There will be a bus going directly from the finals on friday to the after party location!

The danish weather is very unpredictable and it’s not known for being very warm unfortunately. However we might be lucky to get a sunny week but go check out the following website and “find out” how the forecast looks like in the World Cup week.

As you can see in the programme on our website the week will end the 18 of September. After the grand finals, Friday evening will end with an afterparty at Docken – see more here!

Participants who stay at the Cabinn Metro Hotel longer than saturday 19th must pay the difference by departure.

After the University Startup World Cup all the finalists who are invited to Copenhagen for the University Startup World Cup have the opportunity to apply and join the International Development Program.

The program consist of a network of experienced entrepreneurs and executives who act as mentors for promising startups with the goal of turning the innovative ideas into reality. The network of mentors has excessive experience in various areas thus securing professional support and guidance to startups in all industries.

Each team will be awarded a package worth $30.000 of services and products ranging from IT to social marketing, legal services, human resources, management tools and much more. The enrolled startups have access to the mentor program and services for one year and the opportunity to apply for a new or additional expert mentor each quarter.

Investor meetings

For those of you who have submitted a profile on GUST, your profile has been reviewed by investors. The investors have selected teams to meet up with, during the Expo at IDA Wednesday 16. We will inform the teams that have been selected, and you will have approx. 20 minutes to talk to investors.

All the World Cup participants will be part of an investor pitch training workshop Wednesday morning, to prepare you for meeting an investor either same day or in the future.

Expo, what should I prepare?

Wednesday, September 16, during the afternoon, we will have an Expo where key business people and investors are invited to network and be introduced to your business idea. Therefore, please bring something that you can present on a stand during the Expo (presentation on iPad, prototype, flyers, pictures or something you feel represent your business idea). You will have a small cafétable and approx. 2×2 meters space. Also remember visit cards and other promotional materials.

How about pitching?

As part of the University Startup World Cup competition you will be pitching (pitch + show slide deck) in front of a jury, who will then ask questions about your business. Based on your presentation and your reflections on the questions, they will chose if you have won the judging round. For tips on preparing a pitch, see here.Your pitch must be in English and you have only 4 minutes pitch time, followed by 15 minutes of Q&A from the judges!

All startups who has applied for a mentor will have the possibility to meet their mentor for the first time at the Expo event (if mentor are able to make it for the day). We are in the matching process right now and will let you know when we have found the right match for you. Please be patient, the perfect match takes time.

Your are waiting in front of the jury room. When it is your turn your will be called into the jury room. 5 judges, experts within the category will be sitting in the room. They are ready to listen to your pitch. You now have 4 minutes for pitching and 15 minute Q&A. You will be judged at following criterias:CleanTech & Environment, Life Science & MedTech, Mobile & Web, Product & Technology, Social Entrepreneurship. The 3 finalists in each category will be announced next morning at the final. See more in the program here

In the morning will you as a category finalists pitch in front of a closed judging panel again (4 minutes pitch, 15 minutes Q&A, you know the drill). The category winner will later be announced at stage. All category winners now pitch live on stage to compete on being the main world cup winner. You will pitch 4 minutes at stage in front of a VIP panel and all spectators, and a short Q&A from the VIP jury will take place. Public transportation (metro & bus)

Copenhagen has a great public transportation system. You can get around everywhere with metro or bus. To plan your trip use http://www.rejseplanen.dk/ (English site available). It will guide you through which buses, trains or metroes you need to take in order to get to your destination.

We recommend you to buy a “Flex Card” for 7 days. With this card you have unlimited public transportation in Copenhagen for your stay (airport to center is also included). It cost 50 € and can be bought in all 7elevens and ticket offices at train stations.

Biking

People in Copenhagen LOVE biking! You can rent and get easily around in Copenhagen at a electric City Bike. In case of an emergency while you are in Copenhagen, always dial 112. It is a free call which will connect you to the police, fire brigade or hospital. If you need a chemist or dentist, there are a few which are open 24 hours.

Police, fire brigade and ambulance

  • Call (+45) 112 for life threatening emergencies and ask for the police, fire department or ambulance service.
  • Call (+45) 1813 for injuries or sudden illness and speak to a nurse or doctor, or to go to a hospital emergency department.
  • Call (+45) 114 for police, when it is not an emergency.
  • Speak slowly and distinctly. State telephone number and address. Emergency calls from public pay phones are free. Go to the website of the Danish police.

  • There is no shortage of pharmacies in Copenhagen; just look for the green “a” sign that symbolises the Danish word for chemist: Apotek.

  • The Doctors at Laegelinien provide competent health care day and night. Telephone consultations and prescriptions from DKK 130. House and hotel calls from DKK 1200.

  • The Private Doctor is on call seven days a week, 08:00 – 24:00. House or hotel calls within an hour. Prices start at DKK 1,400. House calls and clinic consultations are the same price. Acute dental treatment can also be organised. Tel.:+45 6075 4070.
